Apply culturally competent evidence-based practice skills adaptable to meet the needs of individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds by utilizing understandable language and multi-culturally sensitive communication skills. RATIONALE During my junior year of 2006, along with two other classmates I participated in an immersion experience. This experience came from a course objective in Social Work with Special Populations, SOCW 333. The focus of the course was to implement evidence-based generalist practice congruent with culturally competent social work with individuals, families, and groups. It also taught how to assess and address societal power and status structures and the dynamics of privilege and oppression and how they contribute to the creation of differences, to the types of problems that clients experience and to miscommunications and distrust in therapeutic relationships. During the immersion experience I obtained a closer view of individuals with mental disabilities, this was a population that I had not had previous exposure to. The knowledge obtained from this experience allowed me to have a new perspective on lives of individuals with mental disabilities. Through research, exposure to the individuals community, and interviewing the family I was able to examine my biases and beliefs about this population and replace that with empathy. I became aware of the stigma that surrounds these individuals and the problems that occur due to them. Having a mental disorder doesn't mean you can't live a happy and productive life, it just requires some assistance. OBJECTIVE 2 Synthesize and integrate varied sources to inform decisions and create solutions and appropriate problem-solving strategies congruent with the socialwork knowledge base. RATIONALE During SOCW 407 Practice III, I participated in the U.S. Social Forum held in Atlanta Georgia on June 26-July 1 2007 and The Chattanooga Truth Commission held in Chattanooga Tennessee on December 2007 at the Partnership for Families, Children, and Adults. The US Social Forum provided a space to build relationships, opportunites to learn from each other's experiences, a chance to share our analysis of the problems our communities face, and bring renewed insight and inspiration. It alowed the opportunity to help develop leadership and develop consciousness, vision, and strategy needed to realize another world. The USSF sent a message to other people’s movements around the world that there is an active movement in the US opposing US Policies at home and abroad. The theme of the forum was that we must declare what we want our world to look like and begin planning the path to get there. A global movement is rising. The USSF was our opportunity to demonstrate to the world "Another World is Possible"! The Truth Commission was an opportunity for me to take leadership and use the resources that I could, along with my classmates, to organize an event open to the public to document human rights violations. Our class worked with the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC), when documenting the violations and organizing the event. The project was funded and organized entirely by the BSW class of 2008, we utilized our skills and knowledge from the social work knowledge base to assist in creating a solution to the violations that many Americans face. We worked collectively in small groups to accomplish our goal. I was on the panel selection which was in charge of choosing the testimony and also going out into the community to interview people and document their human right violations. I also participated in the arts and culture group which collected art work from local artists in the community to display at the event. Attached are copies of the testimonies that were chosen by the panel selection to be part of the truth commission, along with some documentation on PPEHRC and the groups that organized the event. OBJECTIVE 3 Demonstrate professional behavior congruent with the social work Code of Ethics and apply strategies to effectively identify, address, and resolve ethical conflicts in professional practice. RATIONALE Throughout my education at Chattanooga State and UTC I have completed 640 hours of internships. I completed 40 hours at East Ridge Retirement Center, 200 hours at Catholic Charities and 400 hours at Moccassin Bend Mental Health Institution. I have had several opportunities through my placements to demonstrate my ability to effectively identify, address, and resolve ethical conflicts in professional practice. While completing each of my placements I have adhered to the NASW Code of Ethics whenever I was in contact with other professionals which presented ethical conflicts. OBJECTIVE 4 Apply strategies for continuous self-evaluation including supervision and consultation, and feedback from peers and other sources for self development. RATIONALE Self evaluation has always been a part of my journey through the social work program. It is important that I receive feedback from peers and instructors for self development. It is often a challenge to be evaluated and to acknowledge our flaws but by doing so I have grown. Being able to accept feedback and to apply it to my work has helped me to identify my strengths and weakness in my practice. Being aware of the areas I excel and those that I need to improve in allows me to effectively work with clients. I have been evaluated during my field placement and the classes I have taken in the social work program. I have attached a copy of evaluations tools that have been used to document my progress. OBJECTIVE 5 Practice with an understanding of human rights and social justice by engaging in systematic social change to alleviate economic deprivation and oppression by applying change strategies to begin the process of achieving a just society in a global community. RATIONALE In SOCW 417 Research, I wrote a research brief that demonstrated my understanding of human rights and social justice to alleviate economic deprivation and oppression. The paper required me to research an area of evidence based practice. The brief summarizes recent research of social policy from a national and international perspective for individuals with disabilities. OBJECTIVE 6 Integrate an appreciation for the history of the social work profession and the relationship between social welfare policies and the social work profession to inform the context of current generalist practice. RATIONALE In SOCW 417 Research, I researched a recent area of evidence based practice on the mentally ill and the impact that health insurance has over them. Completing the assignment required me to critique a policy, identify implications for social work practice and to provide recommendations for practice with systems of all sizes. OBJECTIVE 7 Evaluate the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions and other generalist practice activities and client situations in the context of political and social policy by applying both quantitative and qualitative evaluation, research, and effective writing skills to a variety of practice settings. RATIONALE During my junior year of fall 2007, in SOCW 417 Research, I developed a request to conduct a research project by completing a research proposal. The attached document is what I submitted for approval. A copy of my approval to complete my project is included as well. My research project looks at the relationship of access to healt OBJECTIVE 8 Function as a professional, collaborative, and supportive team member in implementing agency mission and functions. RATIONALE I have attended several meetings with staff members at Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institution that are aimed towards implementing the recovery model into practice while working with patients at the agency. A key component to the recovery model states that patients must be a part of their recovery and that people in recovery shloud be role models by being in roles of leadership. I was able to attend a recovery model workshop at the agency where individuals in recovery spoke and also attended a recovery model seminar at the AIM center where the discussion of people in recovery shaping mental health services occured. I have attached my certificates of attendance to the events. OBJECTIVE 9 Apply an understanding of the effects of interpersonal, social, and institutional oppression and discrimination in assessing and planning change in service delivery systems and organizations. RATIONALE In SOCW 441 Field Seminar II, I completed a case study that focused on a client system in the agency setting of Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institution, where I have completed my field placement. Many of the patients at the agency face barriers to discharge because of oppression and discrimination. The patient that is discussed in the study faces barriers to discharge due to the oppression that staff and the community place onto the patient due to their reason for admission to the agency. OBJECTIVE 10 Contribute to the service-centered focus of the university in promoting intellectual, ethical, social, and cultural professional growth to enrich one’s own life and the lives of others and in preparation for functioning professionally in a variety of entry-level practice settings. RATIONALE I have been acknowledged and invited into the Honor Society. As a requirement, I will be taking part in a community service project on April 26, 2008. Along with my classmates, we will being registering people to vote and hosting activities for families in a local Chattanooga neighborhood.
